HSBC is committed to the development of golf at all levels globally. In addition to sponsoring top tournaments like HSBC Champions in China, HSBC and China Golf Association launched China Golf Association – HSBC China Junior Golf Development Programme in 2007. The programme includes tournaments, player and coach training, ranking system and golf-in-school programme. It is the only official-sanctioned long-term, systematic, overall programme dedicated to the promotion, development and improvement of junior golf in China.
Little gentleman on the course – story
about junior golfer Ou Yang Zheng
"Golf is an important part of my life" says Ou Yang
Ou Yang Zheng is talented in sports. Apart from table tennis, he also likes swimming and snooker. But his favourite is definitely golf. He said, "golf is different from other sports. To play golf, you need to concentrate. It requires both prudent thinking and a calm mind to confront challenges. Also, I need to travel a lot to play at different tournaments, so compared with my friends, I'm more capable in taking care of myself. I like golf, it's an important part of my life."
Balance between study and golf
Ou Yang Zheng said although it is not easy to be a student and player at the same time, he will never give up his academic studies. As a middle-school sophomore, he goes to classes in the morning and attends training in the afternoon, and also needs to take tutorials frequently. He needs to take leave often to attend tournaments. The school is quite supportive of his golf activities; his teachers and classmates help him a lot to ensure he will not lag behind in his studies.
I'm growing up with HSBC Junior Golf Championship
Ou Yang Zheng is quite popular among junior golfers. He wins much attention from national team coaches in the recent national team selection test. For all the honours and compliments he has received, he said, "I won't think too much of them. I will take them as inspiration and keep on practising hard, because I have just started."
At the kick-off ceremony at the Guangzhou stop, Ou Yang Zheng, as the MVP of the previous stop, made a speech on behalf of all junior golfers. He said, "We all grow up with the HSBC Junior Championship. Here, we not only accumulate experience but also learn many important morals for life. We would like to take this opportunity to thank HSBC and CGA for providing such a good platform for young people who love golf in China. We will work harder on learning and practising and look forward to making great achievements to add to the prestige of the country."
These young people have made great improvements through the tournaments. With their persistence and through their endeavours, we believe many of them will be glittering on the course of HSBC Champions in the near future.
