HSBC China has published the first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report by a locally incorporated foreign bank, illustrating our extensive CSR commitments. Click to download the PDF file of the CSR Report.


Key CSR initiatives of HSBC China include:

•In cooperation with the UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) in Shanghai, HSBC China sponsored and co-launched the three-day training programme - “Leadership Programme: Environment for Sustainable Development” in 2006, targeting government officials in charge with environmental protection. In April 2007, China’s environmental authorities - the Centre for Environmental Education and Communications of the State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) joined HSBC and Tongji to co-host the programme, creating a pioneering example showing how government, enterprise and universities can make joint efforts in environmental protection and sustainable development.

•Working with Shanghai Greening Committee, HSBC China sponsored in a series of green campaigns including fostering a green park of 20,000 sqm in downtown Shanghai in support of the government’s urban environmental efforts, and sponsoring the care of 10,000 sqm of wetland in Shanghai’s Paotaiwan Wetland Forest Park.

•Providing on-the-ground support for the HSBC Group’s five-year, US$100 million programme “The HSBC Climate Partnership” to respond to the urgent threat of climate change worldwide.

•Sponsoring the three-year research project by the School of Economics and Management (SEM) of Tsinghua University on the development of the financial market in China’s rural areas. As part of the research, more than 50 HSBC China volunteers joined Tsinghua students and teachers in 2006 and 2007 and conducted field research in the rural areas of four provinces to understand the financial needs of the local rural communities.

•HSBC China lead sponsors of a two-year (2007-2008) research programme by the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) of the State Council to provide nutrition to children in poor families in rural areas. The programme is designed to provide data for the Central Government's policy making to guarantee nutrition for children in China’s impoverished regions.

•Sponsoring Economics Lectures at Fudan University and Peking University to promote international exchange of economics studies.

•Supporting the 2007 Special Olympics in Shanghai, including the distribution of a booklet to all elementary and high school students in Shanghai, and encouraging staff to volunteer support for the athletes. Almost 300 staff members took part as volunteers.
