HSBC is such a fascinating place to work because of its over 140-year history in China and global coverage in over 80 countries and territories across the world. The unmatched combination of local and international elements in this organization makes the Bank an extremely unique player in the international banking arena. By working in Personal Financial Services, I am in fact embracing all the country's positive development in the banking industry as the market deregulates and local residents' wealth accumulates. I am lucky that I have been growing along with the organization ever since the day I joined the Bank. Over the past 10 years I have witnessed an enlightening economic cycle full of the flavors and excitement of volatility, downturn, rebound, revival, reform and evolution. And HSBC, with its consistent management approach and solid development plan ensures that I will gain experience, learn and grow in this world of constant changes.

Admittedly, it is not an easy job but one should definitely expect challenges in exchange for quicker personal development. I joined the bank as Banker Development Trainee over six years ago and I am now managing a balance sheet of more than RMB2bn and seeing decent revenue contributions. I can comfortably talk to either the CEO/CFO about their strategy or the treasury assistant about operational details; I have established good credibility and a strong network both externally and internally.

Five years have past since my first working day in HSBC. This is not a long time, but it has been long enough for me to transform from a fresh graduate to a team leader of the Shanghai Hong Kong-desk Team.
Since joining the bank as a banker trainee, I have been through the general banker training program, including classroom training and different postings for on-the-job training. My first job was with Guangzhou branch as Counter Executive leading a team of five people, all of whom had much more experience than me. It was a great challenge but the words from my first mentor inspired me: “technical experience is not the only key, you can always prove yourself and do better than others if you look at things with a broad view.” I took the words with me since then and tried my best to apply them all along the way.
After I graduated from the two-year trainee program, I joined the Commercial Banking (CMB) team in Shanghai. Here I met a group of lovely colleagues: smart and helpful. Together with them, I won customers’ trust, developed a diversified portfolio and doubled the wallet share, of which I am very proud. More than that, I learned a lot from customers’ vision and market intelligence. CMB has inspired me to work hard with my talented colleagues and I appreciate the fair work environment.
Five years is a long time in today’s banking world and more and more people keep asking me why I am still with HSBC. Every time I have been asked, I said nothing but just smiled. I say to myself:’ I am still a trainee with HSBC, and my learning path in the Bank will never end.’
